You’ve done your homework. You’ve researched the company, explored their website and social media, checked out Glassdoor reviews, and even found an interesting article written by the interviewer to bring up during your chat.
You arrived early, found a nearby coffee shop, and feel as prepared as you can be. The interview starts, and the first question is: “So, tell me about yourself.” Suddenly, your mind goes blank.
You’re left scrambling for words, unsure of what to say about the person you know best - yourself. You mutter something unconvincing, and from there, the interview spirals. What went wrong?
For many, what seems like a simple question, is one of the most challenging to answer. Why? Because it’s open-ended, leaving you unsure of where to start or what the interviewer wants to hear. But here’s a secret: there’s no perfect answer. The key is to understand that the question is an opportunity, not a trap.
Why do interviewers ask this?
In 2024, as the job market becomes increasingly competitive, this question is more relevant than ever. Employers are not just looking for qualifications; they want to understand who you are as a person and how you’ll fit into their company culture.
When we ask, “Tell me about yourself,” we’re really trying to make you feel comfortable, get to know you, and put you on an even ground by talking about something (anything!) that we don’t know about.
Here are some helpful tips we recommend you think about while answering this question:
- Pause and plan: Before you start speaking, take a moment to gather your thoughts. It’s okay to pause briefly - it shows you’re thoughtful and composed.
- Highlight what matters: Focus on sharing information that aligns with the job and company. Think about your professional journey, key achievements, and what drives you in your career. Remember, your response should give the interviewer insights into why you’re a great fit for the role.
- Show passion: Talk about something you’re genuinely passionate about, whether it’s related to your career or a hobby. Passion is contagious, and your enthusiasm will make a lasting impression.
- Keep it positive: Talk with a smile – a positive attitude sets the tone for the rest of the interview.
- Be authentic: Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Authenticity is key. If you mention an interest or skill, be prepared to discuss it further. If you say you love to read, you might be asked about the last book you read or your favourite author.
